Workplace Noise

Under the Noise at Work Regulations 2005, employers need to carry out an assessment of workplace noise if exposure is likely to reach either of the Action Levels.

The assessment must be reviewed if there are any significant changes in the work process, and to account for wear-and-tear of machinery. In any case, the assessment should be reviewed at least once every two years.

The main provisions of the Noise at Work Regulations relate to:

  • The reduction of risk;
  • The reduction of noise exposure;
  • Ear protection;
  • Ear protection zones;
  • The maintenance and use of equipment;
  • The provision of information to employees.
